[Making Che] made me consider the issue of whether or not movies matter anymore at all. I think there was a period where they did matter, culturally. I don’t think they do anymore. That added to this sense of what was the point of 8 years of work when movies have become so disposable. There aren’t many opportunities for them to be taken seriously, the way they were in the late ’60s, ’70s

No doubt you have seen the recent reference to the study in England in which it was reported that children in smoking families were more inclined to have lung problems than children in non-smoking families.
Those whose minds are already made up will, of course, assume that this is another basis for indicting cigarette smoking. However, it seems to me that it could just as easily support the “constitutional theory.” As a matter of fact, it reminded me of the idea that I rejected for so many years because it seemed so self-serving, namely, the idea that lung problems cause smoking. As you will recall, the main reason I have recently dared to think about this reverse hypothesis a little bit is the inexplicably high incidence of cigarette smoking among workers who are occupationally exposed to lung irritants.
I am writing you partly to remind you of the idea and partly to ask if you can think of any way of testing the “reverse hypothesis.”

Someone got ahold of some scripts from The Wire and posted them online:Awesome. I hope they posted the version in which Season Five didn’t disappoint…
Dramatically flawed yet thematically gripping, Season Five of “The Wire” nevertheless gathered strength as it went on, culminating in a ways that were alternately chilling and inspiring. And given our current mediapocalypse, Simon’s much-criticized take on the media now looks remarkably prescient.
Ever since I set this blog up to carve out my own little piece of electronic real estate to be used for my own (occasionally devious) purposes, I’ve had an “About” page set up, which is all well and…
